We Audited 13 Ithaca Bar and Restaurant Websites. Most Businesses Need Help.

Why we ran the audit

We built a grading tool that checks everything Google cares about: page speed, mobile usability, SSL security, structured data, meta tags, heading structure, and local search signals. It grades sites A through F, just like school.

We pointed it at 13 well-known Ithaca bars and restaurants to see what the local landscape actually looks like. Not to call anyone out, but to understand the baseline.

The results were rough

The average grade across all 13 sites was a D.

Here is what we found:

  • 10 out of 13 had no meta description. That is the snippet Google shows under your name in search results. Without it, Google guesses, and it usually guesses wrong.
  • One site had no SSL certificate at all. Chrome literally shows “Not Secure” next to the URL. That is a customer walking away before they even see your menu.
  • Most had no structured data. That means Google does not know your hours, your address, your phone number, or what type of business you are. You are invisible in local search results.
  • Several had broken heading structures. No H1 tag, or the H1 was just the word “Home.” Google uses headings to understand what your page is about.
  • One well-known bar’s domain had been hijacked entirely. The site now shows foreign language spam. If they are still in business, they do not know their online front door is gone.

What a D-grade website costs you

When a tourist searches “best bar in Ithaca” or a Cornell student searches “restaurant near campus,” Google picks winners based on these signals. A site with no meta description, no SSL, and no structured data does not get picked. Period.

That is not a hypothetical. That is every Friday and Saturday night. Real customers, real dollars, going to the businesses that show up first.

The good news

Most of these problems are fixable. Some take an afternoon. The hard part is knowing which problems you have and which ones to fix first.

A proper audit tells you exactly where you stand. Not vague advice like “improve your SEO.” A specific, graded report: here is your score, here are the top five things to fix, here is the order to fix them in.
